PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge type surge absorption element with improved response to a surge by sealing hydrogen mixed gas, having a stable property that sparkover voltage does not change, and which can be a surface mounting component having excellent thermal shock resistance with a small square cylindrical thin ceramic envelope. SOLUTION: This discharge type surge absorption element 1 comprises the square ceramic envelope 2 and square electrodes 3 made from oxygen free copper connected to both ends of the ceramic envelope with silver solder 4, provided with recessed parts for absorbing thermal expansion on an outer circumferential surface and arranged oppositely with a discharge gap.
