PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for sealing atmospheric gas with which the capacity in a gas refining apparatus can be compacted without mixing with atmospheric gas in the adjoined different atmosphere, and rolling reduction force is not developed to a steel strip passed through sealing roll parts and slipped flaw and bit flaw with the sealing rolls are not developed. SOLUTION: In the method for sealing the atmospheric gas at the inlet and/or the outlet of a heat treatment furnace for heat-treating the steel strip by sealing inert gas, the method and the device for sealing the atmospheric gas, are as the followings, that is, a plurality of sets of one pair of the sealing rolls interposing the steel strip, are arranged, and both sealing rolls as one pair, are set by arranging the gap having more than the maximum thickness of this steel strip by shifting in the running direction of the steel strip and the atmospheric gas is exhausted from the gap of the plurality of sets of the sealing rolls.
