The retarding plates (1) are released under or just above the waterline on both sides of the ship hull so as to form an angle w.r.t. to the way of ship. The angle can be varied and controlled by pulling/releasing chains or by controlling openings (3) in the surface of the plates to let through some water. The operation is activated by a signal from a radar, sonar, IR, ultrasound, or laser distance sensor, supported by satellite positioning.
