OPTICAL COMPENSATION SHEET, POLARIZING PLATE, AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY USING THE PLATE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical compensation sheet of an excellent surface shape while maintaining the close contact with an orientation film as before and a method of efficiently and stably manufacturing the sheet, and further, to provide a high quality liquid crystal display having a polarizing plate with the optical compensation sheet disposed on one side of the polarizing film.

SOLUTION: The optical compensation sheet is made by forming an orientation film by coating an orientation film-forming composition after applying a hydrophilizing surface treatment on a transparent support, and forming an optical anisotropic layer by coating a liquid containing a liquid crystal compound on it. The alkali saponification is made applicable to this sheet with alkali solution for the hydrophilic surface treatment by forming asperities in advance enough to be flattened at the orientation film surface after coating the orientation film on the surface of the transparent support.
