<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a graphite material capable of affording high discharge capacity and initial charging-discharging efficiency, further capable of affording excellent rapid charging-discharging properties and cycle properties, and additionally capable of industrially easily and inexpensively producing a negative electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery, to provide a negative electrode material obtained by using the graphite material, and to provide a lithium ion secondary battery having the above properties. <P>SOLUTION: In the method of producing a graphite material, mechanical energy is applied to a precursor of a graphite material A and a precursor of a fibrous graphite material B, the precursor of the fibrous graphite material B is stuck to the precursor of the graphite material A, and thereafter, graphitization is performed. The negative electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery is obtained by using the graphite material.
