PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-image-quality luminescence type display device capable of realizing bright display by efficiently extracting light emitted from a luminescent thin film layer toward an observer, having high contrast even in a bright environment in a wide visual angle range, and causing little color variation. SOLUTION: In this luminescence type display device equipped with a plurality of luminescent elements, each luminescent element 70 has a luminescent thin film layer 100 and a light reflecting surface 300 disposed on its back surface; on the front surface side of the luminescent element, a circular polarization reflection layer 500 for dividing incident light into two kinds of circularly-polarized light components by reflection and transmission, a phase compensation layer 800, a quarter-wave plate 700 and a polarization plate 600 are formed; and the polarization plate 800 is formed of a transparent body functioning as a reflectivity ellipsoid wherein there is no reflectivity difference in the in-plane direction, and the reflectivity in the thickness direction is different from that in the in-plane direction.
