The method involves introducing in a suction tube (6) a quantity of additional air so that a predetermined air-fuel ratio is achieved in the combustion chamber if fuel evaporates from the wall of the suction tube. The method may compensate for fuel precipitating on the wall of the suction tube when the throttle flap (8) is closed by introducing additional air downstream of the throttle flap. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for compensating for variations in the composition of an air-fuel mixture.
