<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display whose visibility angle characteristic is improved. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes a 1st optical anisotropic layer, a 2nd optical anisotropic layer, a polarizing film, and a driving liquid crystal cell, and the 1st optical anisotropic layer has a layer formed of a composition containing at least a discotheque liquid crystal compound. In this layer, the disk surface of a discotheque liquid-crystalline molecule slants to a layer plane and the retardation (Re) value of the 1st optical anisotropic layer at a waveform of 550 nm which is defined by an equation (I) Re=(n<SB>x</SB>-n<SB>y</SB>)×d (n<SB>x</SB>is the refractive index in the layer plane in a phase-delay-axis direction, n<SB>y</SB>is the refractive index in the layer plane in a phase-advance-axis direction, and (d) is the thickness of the optical anisotropic layer); and the direction of an axis formed by projecting on the layer plane the optical axis of the discotheque liquid crystal molecule in the 1st optical anisotropic layer is not orthogonal to the mean direction of an axis formed by projecting on the layer plane of the optical axis of the liquid crystal molecule in the driving liquid crystal cell in black display. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
