PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To search the position of an embedded water pipe by generating an acoustic wave distinguishable from surrounding noises from a sufficiently wide range of this water pipe. SOLUTION: An impulse in the striking direction of a hammer is applied to tap water with which an impact application section 2 is filled up, and a water hammer wave 15 is generated by striking the application section 2 which is connected to the water pipe 4 whose position of embedding is a search object and is filled up with the tap water led in from this water pipe 4, with the hammer by a drive unit with a predetermined impact force or by a predetermined impact period. By an impulse applied by the hammer wave 15 propagated from the application section 2 to the water pipe 4, an impulsive sound (acoustic wave) 18 is generated from the water pipe 4, and the position of the embedded water pipe 4 is searched by detecting this impulsive sound 18.
