PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cheap electrolyte membrane which can be utilized for an electrochemical device like a solid polymer fuel cell, with high proton conductivity, excellent in a methanol permeation preventing property when used as a DMFC and in durability when the electrochemical device is operated as a fuel cell. SOLUTION: The electrolyte membrane contains a cross-linked electrolyte polymer composed of (a) a compound having a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond and a sulfonic acid group in one molecule or a salt thereof, and of (b) a compound having a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond, a methylol group bonded to nitrogen atoms of amide or alkyl ether thereof, as essential monomers.
