The steering system (1) for a motor vehicle has an electric motor with a rotor installed co-axially with the steering rod (3). A ball or roller screw gear converts rotational movement of the motor in an axial movement of the steering rod and has a ball nut or roller nut interacting with the spindle section of the steering rod. The ball or roller nut and rotor of the motor are constructed integrally with one another. The housing (9) of the steering gear consists of two sections (9a,9b), and the electric motor and ball or roller screw gear with the ball or roller nut are supported commonly in the same housing section by means of a bearing.
