PURPOSE: A fuel cell system and a controlling method thereof are provided to thaw cooling water in a short period and therefore to improve a starting performance as well as to prevent breakage problems caused by frozen water inside a stack upon leaving a vehicle in a sub-zero temperature. CONSTITUTION: The fuel cell system comprises a fuel cell stack(21), a hydrogen storage and supply system(31), an air supply system, a cooling system and a fuel cell controlling part(10), wherein the fuel cell system further comprises an electric heater(61) for thawing a cooling water in a cooling water tank(51) with a power supply generated from the fuel cell stack(21), and a combustible heater(70) for thawing the cooling water by heating the cooling water tank(51) with a combustion heat generated from additional fuel. In the fuel cell system, the controlling part(10) controls the operation of each heaters(61,70) according to a starting signal of a vehicle and signals inputted from a cooling water thermosensor(56) and a stack thermosensor(23). |
