PURPOSE: A method for sensing the washing amount of a washing machine is provided to sense exact washing amount by excluding the influence of static friction force. CONSTITUTION: A method for sensing the washing amount of a washing machine comprises a step of accelerating a motor till rpm(revolutions per minute) of the motor reaches set rpm after starting the motor(S101); a step of maintaining the motor at constant velocity by the set rpm for first set time(S102,S103); a step of turning off the motor and accumulating electricity regenerated in excess rotation of the motor(S104); a step of restarting the motor if second set time has passed after the rotation of the motor is stopped, and then accelerating the motor till the rpm of the motor reaches the set rpm(S105,S106,S107); a step of maintaining the motor at constant velocity by the set rpm for third set time(S108,S109); a step of turning off the motor and consuming the electricity regenerated in excess rotation of the motor(S110); a step of calculating moment of inertia of the washing by measuring wash tub-angular velocity at regenerative braking start of the motor, wash tub-angular velocity at rheostatic braking start of the motor, a wash tub rotation angle rotated at the regenerative braking of the motor, and a wash tub rotation angle rotated at the rheostatic braking of the motor(S111,S112); and a step of determining the washing amount from the moment of inertia of the washing(S113).
