PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a visual angle-luminance characteristic of half-tones without spoiling a visual angle-contract characteristic in a liquid crystal display mode wherein the phase difference and rotary polarizing property of a liquid crystal layer are controlled with an electric field causing transitions of liquid crystal molecules between a vertical alignment state and a hybrid alignment state.
SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device is equipped with a liquid crystal panel having a liquid crystal layer LQ sandwiched between a couple of electrode substrates AR and CT, a couple of polarizing plates PL between which the liquid crystal panel is sandwiched, and a couple of optical phase difference plates RT which are arranged between the liquid crystal panel and the couple of polarizing plates PL. Each optical phase difference plate RT has refractive index anisotropy in relation nx>ny>nz, where nx, ny, and nz are average refractive indexes in an x-axial, a y-axial, and a z-axial direction, while the z-axial direction is matched with a normal direction. The x-axial direction of each optical phase difference plate RT is nearly parallel to the transmission axis of a polarizing plate PL which is adjacent to the optical phase difference plate RT.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
