The use of Harpagophytum extracts (A) or harpagoside (I) for the prophylaxis or treatment of renal diseases, renal dysfunction and/or renal damage is new. ACTIVITY : Nephrotropic; Antiinflammatory; Analgesic; Antimigraine; Antiarthritic; Osteopathic. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Prostaglandin synthesis stimulant; nitrogen monoxide formation inhibitor; proinflammatory secretory phospholipase A2 secretion inhibitor. In tests in rat mesangium cell cultures, (I) at concentrations of 0.1-1 mg/ml stimulated prostacyclin production and potentiated interleukin-1beta induced stimulation of prostacyclin production.
