摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically anisotropic layer which contributes to the increasing of a viewing angle of a liquid crystal display, and to provide a retardation plate and an elliptically polarizing plate. <P>SOLUTION: The optically anisotropic layer comprises a composition containing a discotheque liquid-crystalline compound and a fluorine-containing compound, molecules of the discotheque liquid-crystalline compound take hybrid alignment in the layer at an average tilt angle of 35-85&deg; to a flat surface of the layer, and a phase difference at 550 nm wavelength is 80-200 nm. The retardation plate comprises the optically anisotropic layer and a second optically anisotropic layer having a phase difference at 550 nm wavelength of 200-350 nm and an Nz factor (=(nx-nz)/(nx-ny)) of 0.5-2.0.
