To join the core 2 and window 1 of the envelope of a television display tube by means of a high melting glaze 6 having a softening temperature lower than that of the envelope, the envelope is heated in a furnace and the glaze 6 melted by a heated electrical conductor 7 surrounding the interface between the core 2 and window 1, the heat radiation from the conductor 7 being focused substantially on to the glaze 6. In addition to the inner concave cross-section of the conductor 7, a heat radiation reflector 8 may surround the conductor 7 to reflect the outer radiation from the conductor 7 back to the glaze 6. The conductor 7 may be in the form of a hollow strip. By focusing on the glaze, the heat to melt the glaze does not damage the phosphor screen 3 or shadow mask 4. A suitable glaze melting between 530‹ and 550‹ C. consists of in weight percentages: PbO 69.5; B 2 O 3 17.5; ZnO 6À0; SiO 2 1.5; Al 2 O 3 5.5. To increase the heat absorption, the glaze may be coloured as by addition of cobalt or manganese dioxide.</p> |
