PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image forming apparatus provided with a configuration capable of preventing the occurrence of an abnormal image by constituting the apparatus, in such a manner that accurate density detection can be performed by preventing the occurrence of staining of a density detector. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus, having the configuration of primarily transferring the visible image formed on an image carrier 10Y to an intermediate transfer body 11A, and to secondarily transfer the primarily transferred image deposited on the intermediate transfer body 11A to a transfer material, is equipped with a density-detecting means 16 which detects the density of the visible image. The density-detecting means 16 is disposed in a state of facing a support member 11B of the intermediate transfer body 11A across the intermediate transfer body 11A. The support member 11B of the intermediate transfer body 11A is made into a configuration 100, to form an electric field of a polarity reverse from the polarity of the toner included in the visible image, by coming into contact with the intermediate transfer body 11A.
