PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder capable of touching a head to a maintenance member through a simple structure without requiring a moving element and a drive element separately. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder comprises a head 1 performing image recording by an ejecting ink from nozzles formed in a nozzle surface toward a recording medium, a first moving means for reciprocating the head 1 along the main scanning direction, a second moving means for regulating the gap between the nozzle surface of the head 1 and the recording medium at the time of image recording by moving the head along the ink ejecting direction, and a means for controlling the first and second moving means. A maintenance member 6 of the head 1 is provided immovably in correspondence with a position where the head 1 does not perform image recording, and the second moving means can move the head 1 up to a position where the nozzle surface of the head 1 is pressed against the maintenance member 6.
