PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a broadcast receiver for automatically detecting a pseudo 16:9 broadcast from a High Vision broadcast, displaying the broadcast by cutting side panels in the case that the broadcast is the pseudo 16:9 broadcast and providing an output of an image signal with 16:9 aspect ratio without cutting the side panels when the High Vision broadcast is a 16:9 broadcast. SOLUTION: The broadcast receiver is provided with a means (7) for discriminating whether or not the High Vision broadcast is the pseudo 16:9 aspect ratio broadcast by detecting (5) the side panels, and a means (6) for providing an output by cutting the side panels when the received High Vision broadcast is the pseudo 16:9 aspect ratio broadcast, and a High Vision broadcast output means for outputting the High Vision broadcast when the High Vision broadcast is not the pseudo 16:9 aspect ratio broadcast.
