<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a compression ignition internal combustion engine for improving ignition performance to enlarge an operation region where compression ignition is possible by ensuring a required exhaust gas quantity also when a mixture quantity or an air quantity is increased with the increase of load. <P>SOLUTION: The opening of an exhaust pipe opening/closing valve arranged in an exhaust system of the internal combustion engine and capable of changing exhaust pressure is controlled (S20, S22), and the operation of a variable valve system capable of opening/closing an intake valve and an exhaust valve at optional timing is controlled (S18, S22). As an embodiment, the operation of the variable valve system is controlled (S16 to S22) so that the intake valve is opened for a prescribed period to lead intake air into the combustion chamber and that the exhaust valve is opened in response to the closing of the intake valve to lead exhaust gas into the combustion chamber.
