1277643 Artificial leather ROHM & HAAS CO 7 July 1969 [11 July 1968] 34196/69 Heading B2E A method of coating a leather substitute comprising a poromeric base substrate having an outer layer of a polyurethane or a mixture (or reaction product) of a vinyl addition polymer and a polyurethane, comprises appling to said outer layer of the base substrate at least one layer comprising a pigment, an aminoplast resin and an acrylic polymer, curing the aminoplast or allowing the aminoplast to cure and depositing a clear film as top coating, said acrylic polymer being a copolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated molecules comprising 2 to 12% by weight of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated acid, 2 to 25% by weight of acrylonitrile, 0 to 10% by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic compound and/or at least one C 1 to C 3 alkyl methacrylate and the balance to make 100% of at least one C 4 to C 8 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and wherein the aminoplast in the uncurved state is a water-soluble condensate of formaldehyde with urea or an aminotriazine, or a methylolated derivative of such a condensate, and the amount of uncured aminoplast being 2 to 20% of the weight of the polymer. Specified unsaturated acids are methacrylic, acrylic, itaconic, methacryloxypropionic, acryloxyacetic, fumaric, maleic and crotonic acid, a (C 1 to C 4 ) alkyl acid maleate and a (C 1 to C 4 ) alkyl acid intaconate. The specified top-coating is cellulose acetate butyrate. |
