1,271,423. Etching. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 2 June, 1969 [27 June, 1968], No. 27754/69. Heading B6J. Cylindrical holes are formed in a solid material which has been subjected to a source of radiation forming tracks of damage therein by contacting the solid with a pre-etchant which attacks and degrades the damaged material and contacting the pre-etched solid with an etchant which attacks the degraded damaged material. The solid is a sheet of glass or polymeric material. The pre-etchant may be sulphuric acid or sulphur trioxide gas. The etchant may be hydrofluoric acid, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or potassium permanganate. The pre-etchant and the etchant may contain a surfactant (examples are given). The damaging radiation is selected from fusion fragments, ions heavier than alpha particles and alpha particles (examples are given). |
