<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a storage device, such as a battery, etc. to be durable against the use to predetermined running mileage or more for a predetermined period irrespective of the traveling environment of an automobile. <P>SOLUTION: A method for controlling the automobile includes a step of calculating an amount of usage of the battery B by integrating discharging current of charging current Ib of a secondary battery for a predetermined time until a counter C becomes larger than a threshold value Cref (S120), and a step of calculating a managed value M by dividing the amount of the usage of the battery by a managing running mileage RL as the running mileage of for predetermined time (S170). The method further includes a step of setting the threshold value Vref for switching a motor running mode and an engine running mode (S200, S210) so that the managed value M and its average Mav becomes less than the threshold value Mset, that is, the amount of the usage of the battery per running mileage for a predetermined time becomes less than a predetermined value.
