摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compression ignition internal combustion engine capable of securing a necessary exhaust gas quantity also when the quantity of air-fuel mixture or air is increased in accordance with an increase in a load, thereby improving ignition performance, and expanding an operating range enabling compression ignition. SOLUTION: In the four-cycle compression ignition internal combustion engine having four cylinders, first exhaust valves 32a for opening/closing an exhaust manifold 34 communicated with an exhaust pipe 36 and second exhaust valves 32b for opening/closing EGR exclusive passages 38a, 38b are provided for the four cylinders, respectively. The compression ignition internal combustion engine is equipped with an exhaust gas introducing means (ECU 24, a variable valve system 54) for opening the second exhaust valve 32b from an intake stroke to a compression stroke in a second cylinder (for example, #2 cylinder) of the four cylinders while opening the second exhaust valve 32b from an expansion stroke to an exhaust stroke in a first cylinder (for example, #1 cylinder) of the four cylinders, and for introducing exhaust gas generated in the first cylinder to the second cylinder.
