PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an image forming apparatus of a low cost with which a good image can be obtained even if a metallic roll is used for a transfer roll. SOLUTION: The metallic roll is arranged as a transfer member 3 in contact with the rear surface of a belt member 2 and the area where the transfer member 3 and the belt member 2 abut is installed on the downstream side of the area where the image carrier 1 and the belt member 2 abut. When the radius of the image carrier 1 is defined as R, the distance between the area where the image carrier 1 and the belt member 2 abut and the area where the transfer member 3 and the belt member 2 abut as d and the value obtained by subtracting the radius R of the image carrier 1 from the distance from the center of the image carrier 1 to the area where the transfer member 3 and the belt member 2 abut as L, the relation L=√(R<SP>2</SP>+d<SP>2</SP>)-R≤0.60 (mm) is satisfied and the flatness of the belt member 2 is kept≤1.5 mm.
