PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a measuring method having capacity for easily calculating distance along a regular (or an irregular) path on a subject, and an area surrounded by the path. SOLUTION: A measuring device comprises an image acquiring system; an optical navigation engine; a computing engine; and a display. The optical navigation engine is connected to the image acquiring system so that they can communicate. The computing engine is connected to the optical navigation engine so that they can communicate. Then, the display is connected to the computing engine so that they can communicate. The method for executing the measurement comprises a step for generating a series of images at a given region of the target; a step for deciding a series of relative changes at the position of a pattern in each set of continuous images; and a step for calculating the distance of the given path on the target as a function of the series of relative changes of the position.
