The invention relates to an illuminating unit comprising at least one light source and at least one transparent light guiding body which is arranged upstream from the light source and has a lateral surface and at least one light emergence side opposing the light source. Said light guiding body at least partially surrounds the light source, and the light emergence side of the light guiding body comprises at least one closed, non-plane outer surface surrounding an optical lens, the outer periphery thereof being further from the light source than the inner boundary. According to the invention, the light source and any point on the lateral surface of the light guiding body lie on an imaginary straight line, said straight line forming an angle with the normal at this point, that is larger than the critical angle of the total reflection at the transition point between the material of the light guiding body and the surroundings of the illuminating unit. The lateral surface of the light guiding body does not have a focal point. The invention enables an illuminating unit with a high light efficiency to be produced in a reproducible manner.
