A method for measuring the free volume in a tank (1a) provides for the steps of pressurising the tank to a predetermined pressure by means of the admission of a gas into the tank, and of calculating the free volume in said tank by direct or indirect measurement of the quantity of gas necessary for pressurising the tank. A measuring device (1, 100) operating according to that method is further described.
