<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To separate the left ventricle by evaluating that the mitral valve has a constricted structure when the left ventricle and the left atrium communicate with each other with the mitral valve in an ultrasonic tomogram of a heart. <P>SOLUTION: First, calculation of the evaluation value for each pixel is developed from a reference position R' inside the left ventricle toward the cardiac wall. The calculation of the evaluation value is based on the closeness of the pixel to the cardiac wall and the evaluation value of the evaluated pixel. As a result, the information on the closeness of the pixel inside the left ventricle to the cardiac wall is accumulatively reflected in the direction of development, and a smooth closed region is formed around the inside of the left ventricle. Next, the evaluation values in candidate point groups 192 and 194 in the outline part within a mitral valve region 190, a region of interest set based on the reference position, are searched, and a point representing the constriction is found based on the variation of the evaluation values.
