PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an artificial seed affording the amount of held water necessary and sufficient for initial raising together with germination and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The artificial seed is obtained by surrounding a plant seed 4 with a culture medium 3 composed of a water holding material 1 having the surface covered with a swellable mineral clay 2 and shaping the whole into a dumpling form.
