[Also in Division D1] A method of bonding together strands or particles of thermoplastic material comprises filling a combustion chamber with an assembly comprising a layer of the strands or particles and a superposed layer of a cellular material, closing the chamber and admitting into it a combustible gaseous medium and effecting ignition of said medium to generate sufficient heat to fuse the particles or strands together where they touch. The strands which may be in the form of filaments, staple fibres, yarns or cords and are optionally knitted or woven and the particles may each be made of thermoplastic material, e.g. polypropylene, nylon or polyvinyl chloride or of non-thermoplastic material, e.g. rayon coated with a thermoplastic material. The cellular material may be a metal gauze, a perforated plastics material or a foam, e.g. polyurethane foam. In the example, a web of polypropylene fibres is placed on a sheet of reticulated polyurethane foam, the resultant assembly being rolled, placed in a cylindrical pressure vessel in which a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen is ignited, the assembly being removed, unrolled and the polypropylene web removed from the foam. |
