PURPOSE: A separate type air conditioner is provided to use a connecting electric wire together with an inverter type air conditioner while realizing control required for an air conditioner. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner includes an indoor unit(31) connected with a primary power source(34), an outdoor unit(32), and a connecting electric wire(33) electrically connecting the indoor unit with the outdoor unit. The indoor unit has first and second switches(38,39). The outdoor unit has a four-way valve(37) switching a refrigerant passage of a freezing cycle, a compressor(35), a heat exchanger(24), a conversion relay(16), a compressor relay(15), and a four-way valve relay(18). The conversion relay has a common terminal(16C), a first terminal(16A) and a second terminal(16B). The compressor relay is communicated with the common terminal of the conversion relay for opening and shutting an electric current to the four-way valve. The four-way valve relay is communicated with the second terminal of the conversion relay for opening and shutting an electric current to the compressor. The outdoor unit has a thyristor(20) detecting the opening and shutting of the second switch and a control unit(30) receiving a signal of the thyristor and controlling operation of the conversion relay, the compressor relay, and the four-way valve relay. The connecting electric wire has first, second and third connecting lines(33A,33B,33C). The first connecting line connects a first pole of the primary power source with a first pole of the compressor via the first switch of the indoor unit. The second connecting line connects a second pole of the primary power source with a second pole of the compressor. The third connecting line connects the first pole of the primary power source with the first terminal of the conversion relay.
