PURPOSE: An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a method for driving the same are provided to enhance the rate of color reproduction by using a plurality of red, green and blue LEDs(Light Emitting Diodes) without use of color filters, and improve display quality of black or white image without lowering of color purity by controlling light transmittance of an LCD panel and brightness of a backlight unit. CONSTITUTION: An LCD comprises an LCD panel(106), a plurality of light sources(134), a light source driving circuit(176), a data driving circuit(172), a gate driving circuit(174), a power generating part(178) and a timing controller(170). The light sources include red, green, and blue LEDs(134a,34b,134c). The LCD displays an image by dividing one frame into red, green, and blue sub-frames and sequentially driving the light sources in accordance with respective sub-frames. The timing controller includes a frame memory and an image signal discriminating and adjusting part. The frame memory stores image signals in frame units. The image signal discriminating and adjusting part discriminates and adjusts image signal data stored in the frame memory.
