<p>Process comprises: (a) contacting ethane and/or ethylene with chlorine and/or HCl and with a molten mass containing a multivalent metal chloride and oxychloride to give a first reaction product comprising vinyl chloride (I) and 1,2-dichloroethane (II); (b) isolating (I) and (II); and (c) contacting (II) with molten mass containing a multivalent metal chloride to give a second product comprising (I). Preferably the molten mass in stage (a) comprises cupric chloride cuprous chloride and copper oxychloride, the molten mass in stage (c) comprises cupric chloride and cuprous chloride and the reaction temperature in (a) and (c) is 371-649 degrees C. The process allows the use of Cl2/HCl mixtures and is highly selective.</p> |
