Novel 2-sulphamoyl-thioxanthones of the formula <FORM:1067472/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are each hydrogen or C1- 4 alkyl or NRR1 forms a pyrrolidino, piperidino, morpholino or 4-alkylpiperazino group, are made by dehydrating the appropriate 3-sulphamoyl - 6 - phenylthio - benzoic acid, suitably by heating with concentrated sulphuric acid. 3 - Sulphamoyl - 6 - phenylthio - benzoic acids used as starting materials are made by chlorosulphonating o-bromobenzoic acid, treating the resulting 3 - carboxy - 4 - bromobenzene sulphonyl chloride with an amine RR1NH, and condensing the 2 - bromo - 5 - sulphamoyl benzoic acid obtained with thiophenol in anionic form in the presence of copper powder. |
