PURPOSE: A washing machine is provided to steadily perform a predetermined antimicrobial treatment for the laundry by adding antimicrobial metal ions into water by a desired level of ion concentration regardless of water quality or water temperature. CONSTITUTION: In a washing machine including a pair of metallic electrodes(A, B), the electrodes elute metal ions into water by allowing a voltage between the electrodes immersed in the water and by flowing an electric current between the electrodes. The value of the current between the electrodes is modified by either water quality or water temperature. The time for metal ionic elution of one electrode into the water used once is changeable by either water quality or water temperature. The current between the electrodes is constant, whereas the voltage allowed between the electrodes is modified by either one. After a current detecting circuit is checked to operate during a time(T1) for checking operation of the current detecting circuit, an electric current starts being supplied between the electrodes, A and B. A voltage is allowed on the A electrode, whereas the B electrode is earthed. At this point, the A electrode serves as a positive electrode, and the B electrode serves as a negative electrode. After the voltage-allowing time(T2), the A electrode stops a voltage allowed. With a voltage-stopping time(T3) as an interval, the B electrode starts a voltage allowed, and the A electrode maintains an earth voltage. The polarities of the electrodes are reversed. The voltage-allowing time and the voltage-stopping time alternate with each other, and the polarities of the electrodes are repeatedly and periodically reversed. An ion elution time(T4) is defined as a sum of the voltage-allowing time and the voltage-stopping time.
