PURPOSE: A method for registering a position of a ribbon moving with a predetermined angular speed and detecting an amount of a ribbon used in a photo printer are provided to determine the time required for the ribbon by using the length of the following pigment frame from not printed part. CONSTITUTION: A method for registering a position of a ribbon(120) moving with a constant angular and detecting the amount of the ribbon(120) used in a photo printer is provided with the printer including a print head for delivering pigment of the ribbon(120) to a medium, and a ribbon(120) driving device for supplying the ribbon(120) by moving the ribbon(120) with a predetermined speed. The length of time of a first state is changed when a detection signal is changed from a signal having the first state to a signal having a second state. An amount of the ribbon(120) is used on the basis of the length of the time corresponding to the first state.
