PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous coating composition useful as a coating when dry, having low yellowness, and keeping the yellowness at a low level even when aged. SOLUTION: A method for producing the aqueous composition suitable as the coating when dry incudes (a) a process for supplying at least one aqueous polymer which is produced by polymerizing at least one ethylenic unsaturated monomer and has a glass transition temperature of -80°C to 110°C and (b) a process for adding at least one coordinating agent in an amount of at least 10 wt.ppm based on the dry weight of at least one of the polymer, wherein the aqueous composition contains an ammonium compound in an amount of 0-100 wt.ppm based on the dry weight of at least one of the polymer.
