PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake device capable of inexpensively and easily monitoring braking condition of the brake device provided in an electric motor or a machine to be driven by the electric motor. SOLUTION: This brake device is fitted to the electric motor or a movable section of the machine to be driven by the electric motor. Whether a brake lock signal is effective or not is determined (200), and when the brake lock signal is effective and a lock command is output to the brake device, the predetermined driving command is given to the motor (201). Whether the motor is stopped or not is determined on the basis of position from the motor, speed and a current feedback signal (202). When a determination that the motor is not stopped is done, a warning or an alarm for informing abnormality of the brake device is output (205). Since condition of the brake device can be monitored by utilizing position of a motor control system, speed and the current feedback signal, the brake device can be monitored at low cost.
