A flux of particular use in steel making comprises, (a) fluorspar containing by weight at least 60% CaF 2 , less than 15% SiO 2 and less than 0À5% S; (b) dolomite containing at least 40% MgCO 3 and less than 3% SiO 2 and/or a bauxite containing at least 50% Al 2 O 3 (c) 3-6% of the total flux of a binder comprising 50-85% of double lignosulphite of ammonium and calcium and 15-50% by weight of a clay, the components (a) and (b) being in such proportions that the flux contains the following ratios The flux is made by crushing the components (a) and (b), mixing them and drying to a moisture content of less than 2%, mixing the product with the binder and adjusting the moisture content to 2-5%, agglomerating the mixture e.g. by pressing into briquettes and hardening the binder as by heating to 200‹ -250‹ C. The components (a) and (b) should be crushed to a grain size of less than 2 mm. The examples relate to the use of the flux in an L.D. steel making process.</p> |
