A power saw comprises a motor 40 having an output element 46 rotatable about a predetermined axis, a carrier mounting means 108 for mounting a saw blade carrier 58 at one end of the motor for reciprocation in a path substantially parallel to the predetermined axis to impart alternate cutting and return strokes to a blade carried thereby, a drive assembly 54 connecting the output element to the carrier to reciprocate the carrier upon rotation of the output element, and a motion producing assembly driven by the motor output element for simultaneously moving the saw blade carrier 58 transversely to its path of reciprocation during the carrier's cutting stroke and in the opposite direction during its return stroke. The motor may be of the two-speed or continuously-variable type and have a pinion 52 formed on its output element 46 engaging an internally-toothed gear 60 which is formed with an eccentric 70 and is keyed to a spindle 70 supported in bearings in the saw housing. The spindle is integral with a wedge-shaped plate from which extends a pin 74 rotatably supporting a wobble plate 78 having a projection 82 engaging a notch 84 in the saw blade carrier which is thereby reciprocated in the mounting means 108 when the spindle 60 is rotated. The mounting means is supported by a pivot 110 and is pressed by a spring 134 so that a follower 106 engages a bearing 104 on the eccentric 70 to effect the transverse movement of the carrier as it is reciprocated. A cam 154 can be moved to a position withdrawing the follower from the bearing so that the carrier has a pure reciprocating motion. The carrier is guided by rectangular bearing blocks 128 and lubricated from U- shaped felt strips. The blade is secured to the carrier by a cube-shaped hollow block 204 having a screw through one wall, a dowel 228 engaging a hole in the blade. The blade extends through a work-engaging shoe 30 mounted on a pivot 32 on the housing. |
