PURPOSE: An image recording/regenerating apparatus and its data re-compressing recording method are provided to prevent stored data from being deleted, to prevent a current recording medium from being exchanged with other medium of a larger capacity or to prevent another recording medium from being added in a case that a storage capacity of a recording medium is in excess. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus comprises an IO terminal(110), a switching module(123), a video decoder(131), an audio AD converter(133), the first path setting switch(140), the second path setting switch(150), an MPEG(Motion Picture Experts Group) encoder(161), an HDD(Hard Disc Drive, 171), and a main controller(180). The IO terminal(110) receives signals generated by various image signal sources, and outputs received signals or signals regenerated by the HDD(171) and a disc player(175). The video decoder(131), controlled by the main controller(180), decodes analog video signals, received via the switching module(123), and inputs digital video signals to the MPEG encoder(161) via the first path setting switch(140). The audio AD converter(133) converts analog audio signals, inputted via the switching module(123), into digital audio signals, and inputs the digital audio signals to the MPEG encoder(161) via the first path setting switch(140). The main controller(180) is a single chip type IC which combines a CPU(181) with an MPEG decoder(183) and an OSD(On Screen Display) unit(185).
