PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it easy to decide on legitimacy by causing a diagnostic device to quickly display a CVN (Calibration Verification Number). SOLUTION: This controller 1 includes a flash memory 5 made rewritable for storing programs or data, and a CVN computing means for computing CVN values that guarantee the contents thereof. The controller has an EEPROM 6 made rewritable for storing computed CVN storage values. When a determination is made that no rewrites were made on the flash memory 5, the computed CVN storage values stored in the EEPROM 6 are outputted to compute a CVN and the computation result is outputted; when there is a rewrite on the flash memory 5, the computation result is outputted after computation of the CVN is complete.
