An information recorder/reproducer in which presence or absence of data on a rewritable information recording medium can be managed on a specified recording unit basis without increasing the apparatus cost. Upon receiving a user data write designation from a host unit, a CPU updates the content of a management table at step (shown by "S" on the drawing) 1, writes user data delivered from the host unit at step 2, and finishes user data write processing. In other words, the CPU updates the content of the management table on the information recording medium before writing the user data.
