PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder in which ink being discharged by purging can be received without soiling a carrier or a recording medium, the ink receiver can be contained compactly and the size of the ink jet recorder can be reduced. SOLUTION: When purging is performed, an ink receiving sheet 4 is arranged between a recording head 2 and a carrier 3 by a sheet arranging mechanism 5 and since ink discharged from the recording head 2 is received by the ink receiving sheet 4, the carriage 3, and the like, are prevented from being soiled. Since the ink receiving sheet 4 is contained, while being wound, in a containing box 6 on the outside of a recording region when recording is performed on a recording medium, containing space can be reduced as compared with a case where the ink receiving sheet 4 is contained as it is and thereby the size of the ink jet recorder can be reduced.
