<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform appropriate processing based upon the result of the detection by a detecting means, in an image forming apparatus having the detection means which is on when paper is present in a specific part of a paper conveyance path and when a cover covering the paper conveyance path is open. <P>SOLUTION: A laser printer (image forming apparatus) has the sensor which is on when paper is present in the specific part of the paper conveyance path and when the fixing cover covering the paper conveyance path is open. When the sensor is on at a point in time that the power source of the printer is turned on (S110:Y), display informing that a jam has occurred is shown (S120). In addition, when a printing operation does not take place, display informing that the fixing cover is open is shown (S150, S230) if the sensor is turned on during the stop of a conveying motor (S140:Y, S220:Y), whereas display informing that a jam has occurred is shown (S190) if the sensor is turned on during the drive of the conveying motor (S180:Y).
