PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorbing device for a steering column of a vehicle capable of absorbing the impact energy of each occupant certainly when the vehicle come into collision. SOLUTION: The energy absorbing device for the steering column 2 of the vehicle includes a resilient means having a winding part 7 wound in such a way as clamping round a columnar rod 5 capable of being coupled with the steering column 2 and embodied in the shape of a coil spring 8. The coil spring 8 and the rod 5 are slidable relative to each other so as to absorb the energy through the steering column 2 when the vehicle goes in collision. An adjusting device is arranged to change the clamping force of the coil 7 of the spring 8 relative to the rod 5 by winding or rewinding the coil 7 of the spring 8, and has a means to adjust the clamping force in accordance with the data including the physique of the driver, the vehicle speed, the attitude of the vehicle body, etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
