PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel efficiency at the time of reduced-cylinder operation of a three-cylinder rotary-engine. SOLUTION: The rotary engine is of a deformed three-cylinder type called normally a Wankel type, in which at the time of operation, ignition is made in each cylinder for every one rotation of a rotor 2, that is, normally three times of ignition are made for every one rotation of the rotors 2. From the viewpoint of fuel-efficiency improvement, however, the number of times for ignition is reduced in the manner of twice, five times, twice, once, or zero, five times, etc. (the number of times less than three times). In this case, in order to hinder the original engine-braking from working by intake-exhaust gas, exhaust ports 5 and intake ports 6 are provided at two or more points in the rotor housings and side housings respectively other than conventional intake ports 3 and exhaust ports 4, and all the ports out of the ports at at least four points except the originally existing exhaust-port 4 are opened or closed by a valve mechanism 7.
