The assembly of a shaft upon which is fitted a rotating mechanical seal, has a pair of interacting slide rings (4,5), and a drive collar element (9) which has a tubular-form housing (11) fitting over the outside circumference of one of the slide rings (4) with a radial gap (12). A passage (13) for the feed of a flow medium is provided in the shaft (2) and opens out into a cavity (A) defined by the drive collar housing, whereby the flow medium is carried out through the radial gap. The flow path formed by the radial gap ends at, or close to, the sealing gap (6) between the sealing faces of the slide rings.
